The Small-Town Girl Becomes the Demon King (EP 23): Don’t underestimate the Demon King

T/N: Changed the title to fit the mood of the chapter better.

From here on out, it’s the royal capital,” Levantine said. “Everyone will be wary of you all.”

“Why’s that?”

Our actions have already reached the King’s ears. It’s disadvantageous to make dramatic appearances. It’s a good idea to disguise ourselves as residents once we enter.”

In front of the city gates, an aura surrounded Levantine’s blade, Merle pulled out three white robes from it.

Impersonate nuns with these.”

“We’re here!” Merle cried as the carriage rolled to a stop. “Alright, my rule begins! Here comes the Demon King!” she said as she grabbed Levantine and jumped out of the carriage.

Slime and Succubus were about to change into the robes but decided to jump out with Merle instead.

Merle. Did you listen at all to what I just said?”

“I heard you, but it’s too much trouble,” Merle replied.

Because…?”

“Because I’m the Demon King? Isn’t it awkward for the Demon King to bother to disguise herself?”

Even small steps are required for victory.”

The town that they entered was gorgeous. The city was resplendent with works of art and decorations. The people who were out and about had an elegant appearance and air to them, incomparable with the towns Merle had visited so far.

“Everyone looks so rich.”

Perhaps they’re aristocrats.”

The aristocrats seemed unsurprised and uninterested at the sight of the three suddenly appearing. Even with their unusual looks, they only spared a single glance and nothing after that.

“Even though the Demon King has come, everyone is indifferent,” Merle said.

“It’s a little strange.”

Merle was furious at her appearance getting no attention. The aristocrats act cold and don’t react at all, even in the presence of the Demon King.

Merle grabbed a nearby aristocrat by the neck. “Hey, the Demon King has arrived. Why aren’t any of you reacting?”

“Why should we because of the Demon King? We don’t have the time to deal with vulgar demons. Let me go.”

As the passerby looked down on Merle, he fixed his tie and tried to move around her.

Something clicked. “Vulgar”? “Don’t have the time to deal with”?

She was coming here to conquer. It seems it wasn’t clear enough. Merle swallowed the words that were rising in her throat and swung Levantine instead.

The aristocrat who was about to leave had his head cut clean off and his blood spilling.

Someone finally screams as one person was murdered. With the aristocrats feeling they were in danger, they started screaming and running away.

“So that’s how it is!” Merle said. “This is fine. After all, you can’t get your point across unless you cut them down one by one. You don’t have any sense of risk management.”

“Your Majesty, what’s ‘risk management’?” Slime asked.

“It’s knowledge of what to do when you’re in danger.”

“I see,” Slime said.

“That’s why I want you to divide and attack the humans, Slime. I have to teach them the importance of risk management.”

“Right away!” Slime said.

As Slime split and increased in number, the city became even more panicked as she attacked the fleeing aristocrats. They heard screams everywhere alongside shattering windows and even explosions here and there.

“Ah, I feel like I’m in control,” Merle said.

“Your Majesty, let’s attack the castle right now!” Succubus said.

“Alright, let’s go!” Merle said.

Merle and Succubus ran through the chaos and panic, their goal being the head of the King.

T/N: “Risk Management” is also called “disaster preparedness”. These include first aid training, earthquake and fire safety drills, and knowledge of evacuation protocols and emergency lines.
